Coach Explained: The Definitive Brand Guide for 2026
In 2026, Coach, a well-established American fashion name, is enjoying robust sales growth. The company was created as a small leather workshop, turned into a handbag specialist and now sells clothing, footwear and accessories in stores worldwide. For decades, its core idea has stayed steady: well-crafted leather goods priced below the traditional European luxury houses. A federal court has described that niche as accessible luxury, set apart from both mass-market fashion and true luxury.
This guide sets out how Coach began, who owns it and who runs it, how large the business has grown and what it sells. It also covers the difference between a full-price coach store and a coach outlet, a subject that frequently causes confusion. The numbers are dated to their sources, and all prices are observed market prices and not an official price list.
From a Manhattan Leather Loft to an American Fashion Name

The story of Coach starts in 1941, when a tiny family-run leather workshop was founded in Manhattan. As Coach itself tells it, six artisans worked in a loft on 34th Street, producing wallets, billfolds and other small leather goods for men. The handbags came later, along with the Coach name, which dates to about 1960 or 1961. It was not Miles and Lillian Cahn who were the first owners of the workshop, even though the couple is sometimes incorrectly presented as such.
The Cahns joined the business in 1946, and Miles was in charge of the factory by around 1950. The couple took charge in 1961, when Miles and Lillian bought the shares of the original owners. The proposal to begin adding women’s handbags reportedly came from Lillian Cahn, and the move transformed the company. Miles Cahn is credited with developing glovetanned leather, a finish modeled on the way a worn baseball glove softens with use.
How Bonnie Cashin Refreshed Coach
No designer has been more closely linked with early Coach than Bonnie Cashin, the first to serve as coach sweatshirt its lead designer. Reportedly, she worked as a contracted designer instead of as a staff employee, and she was not a co-founder. Her exact start date is a minor mystery, as Coach’s own pages cite both 1961 and 1962. What is not in doubt is that she created designs for Coach until 1974.
Bonnie Cashin unveiled the brass turnlock closure in 1964, and Coach says it was inspired by the toggle on the top of her convertible. She is also credited with side pockets, coin-purse details and brighter colors that freshened the brand’s look. Today, the turnlock remains one of the most distinctive Coach details, appearing on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.
From Sara Lee to Tapestry: A History of Owners and Listings
Sara Lee Corporation bought Coach in July 1985. In October 2000 the company listed on the stock market, and the following year Sara Lee is said to have completely exited. Coach’s Signature collection, with the “C” monogram, debuted in 2001, which means the pattern is not the mid-century heritage motif it can appear to be. On 31 October 2017, Coach, Inc. changed its name to Tapestry, Inc., and its stock ticker switched from COH to TPR.
The Coach brand, its stores and its merchandise were not renamed; only the parent company took a new name. Stuart Weitzman, which Coach, Inc. had acquired in 2015, passed from Tapestry to Caleres in a deal that was finalized on 4 August 2025. Of the only two brands Tapestry owns in 2026, namely Coach and Kate Spade, Coach is by far the more substantial.
The Capri Deal That Never Closed
On 10 August 2023, Tapestry announced an agreement to acquire Capri Holdings, the company that owns Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo. The Federal Trade Commission challenged the deal in April 2024 and asked a federal court to stop it with a preliminary injunction. That preliminary injunction was approved on 24 October 2024 by a federal judge in the Southern District of New York. It was not a final ruling on the merits, but it stopped the companies from closing while the challenge went on.
In its decision, the court agreed that an accessible luxury handbag market exists, distinct from both mass-market bags and true luxury. Saying that the legal process was unlikely to finish before their February 2025 deadline, Tapestry and Capri called off their agreement on 14 November 2024. The deal was never completed, so Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo sit outside Tapestry.
Who Is in Charge at Coach Today
At Tapestry, the parent company, Joanne Crevoiserat serves as chief executive. Todd Kahn heads the brand itself as Coach’s CEO and brand president, a role he took up on an interim basis in July 2020 and took on permanently in April 2021. The creative side falls to Stuart Vevers, whose appointment became public in June 2013.
Vevers reportedly showed his first Coach collection in February 2014, and he remains Coach’s creative director in 2026. His route to Coach reportedly went through Mulberry and then Loewe, where he served as creative director. Past designs have been brought back and vintage shapes recast into new bags such as the Tabby, as Coach has leaned on its archive under his direction. The Cunard Building in New York was the setting for his Fall 2026 collection on 11 February 2026.
Coach in Numbers
Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year ended 27 June 2026 provides the most complete picture of Coach’s scale. Coach posted net sales of $6,914.7 million, a rise of 24% on the prior year, whereas Tapestry as a whole reported $8,004.2 million. In other words, Coach generated around 86% of group sales.
The number of Coach’s directly operated stores came to 973 at the end of that fiscal year: 336 in North America and 637 internationally. You may also see a figure of about 1,299 stores, but that figure includes every store across Tapestry, not Coach alone. Growth at a mid-teens percentage rate in the average unit retail price of Coach handbags during the year was also reported by Tapestry. The company has linked that rise partly to less promotional activity.

Bags, Ready-to-Wear and Footwear: What Coach Makes
Structured icons sit alongside soft, slouchy leather in coach handbags today, with handbags still the heart of the business. Important launches include the Tabby in 2019, drawn from a 1970s archive shape, the Rogue in 2016 with a return in 2021, and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, in August 2024. Having debuted on the Fall 2024 runway, the Empire Carryall went on sale in February 2025. Observed prices varied widely: the Kisslock Frame Bag, said to have opened the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350, while a Rogue 25 in alligator came in at $8,000, the highest bag price observed. The Coach Originals line revives archive designs as newly made bags, so those pieces are not vintage.
Varsity jackets made in leather and in leather with wool, the brand’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats were all part of coach clothing for Fall 2026, a sign that ready-to-wear is now a serious part of the offer. Blazers, A-line skirts and flared trousers also featured in the same show, along with floor-length high-collar dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. Fashion press reported loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall, while footwear also includes sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker. Coach also runs Coach (Re)Loved, launched in 2021 and reported to cover trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces, plus Coachtopia, a circular-design sub-brand launched on 20 April 2023.
Where to Shop: Coach Store, Coach Outlet and Online
You will find the current collections in a full-price coach store, and the largest flagships use the Coach House name. Another Coach House, at 645 Fifth Avenue, has been reported as targeted for 2027, after the New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue, which reportedly opened in 2016. London’s Coach House on Regent Street also opened in 2016, and in the UK the brand sells through Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis as well. For the newest season, look to the full-price range, whether you want a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket.
As Coach’s own official channel, Coach Outlet includes both outlet stores and an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website. In 2014, Coach’s head of investor relations was quoted as saying around 85% of outlet merchandise was made for the outlet channel, though that figure is dated, and Tapestry has since spoken about bringing some full-price product into outlets. Claims that outlet bags are always worse, or exactly the same as boutique bags, outrun the public evidence. Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet are among the UK outlet store locations. Searches for the brand are sometimes typed as “couch” or “cosch”; before buying, check that any site promising big discounts is really Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
